Who is Wainel "wayne" Santiago

I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and raised in New York City, where I spent my formative years and much of my adult and professional life. From my school and college days to my early career as a contractor, and later as an architect and educator, I proudly consider myself a born-and-bred New Yorker. New York City is not just where I live—it is the home that has shaped my identity and fueled my professional journey.

I now reside in both New York City and Poughkeepsie, where my family and I have a home. Balancing these two locations allows me to enjoy the vibrant energy of the city while also embracing the tranquility of upstate life.

Academic and Professional Journey

I earned a double major from CUNY City College in Architecture and Civil Engineering, graduating with a strong GPA of 3.25 and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture. Continuing my academic journey, I obtained my B.Arch from graduate school, deepening my expertise in the field.

To further solidify my professional foundation, I completed the rigorous NCARB Intern Development Program (IDP), qualifying as a candidate to sit for the NCARB exam. This certification process represents my commitment to becoming a licensed architect in the state of New York—a goal driven by my passion for creating innovative designs and contributing to the built environment.

Professional Experience

My professional journey in architecture and construction has been both diverse and deeply impactful. I began my career as a contractor, later transitioning to roles as an expediter, project architect, and project manager. These experiences allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of the industry, both in the field and in project oversight.

Following these roles, I served in the Department of Buildings during the harrowing times of 9/11. Initially, I worked as a building inspector, ensuring structural safety during a period of immense challenge. Later, I became a plan examiner, where I utilized my knowledge to assist architects, engineers, and clients in navigating and applying building codes and zoning resolution laws effectively. Through this work, I contributed to the safe and expert growth of our city.

This foundation of practical expertise positioned me to bring unique insights and solutions to the architectural field. By bridging my hands-on experience with regulatory knowledge, I’ve been able to foster collaboration and innovation in creating designs that meet both aesthetic aspirations and structural standards.

After dedicating 30 years to the construction industry, I witnessed firsthand the impact of the 2009 recession, which led to the shutdown of financial institutions across the United States and a significant contraction in construction as major banks tightened their lending practices. During this challenging period, my wife encouraged me to leverage my extensive experience to educate and inspire students. She believed that sharing my knowledge could make a meaningful difference in their lives, shaping the next generation with practical insights and expertise.

"Since 2018, I have had the privilege of working within the DOE system, supporting students in various capacities. Collaborating with my wife, who worked with District 75 students with disabilities, I gained valuable insight into special education and effective teaching strategies. Over the years, I have applied this knowledge first as a substitute teacher serving long time assignments then as a Student Teacher to assist my students in achieving academic excellence, particularly special education students. Graduating from Relay Graduate School of Education with a GPA of 3.78

Drawing on my architectural background, I have enriched my teaching by providing unique perspectives in global history education and specialized instruction for select students. I have introduced principles of architecture and design, as well as construction practices, to foster technical skills such as drawing, project coordination, and managing a design project from inception to completion. This multidisciplinary approach has empowered students to think critically and creatively, laying a foundation for success in both academic and professional endeavors.
